What does this fault code mean?
The left front wheel speed sensor is sending a signal, but it is implausible. The ABS module sees the wheel apparently stopping, turning too slowly or changing speed unnaturally fast compared with the other wheels. Because the circuit itself is intact, the cause is more often mechanical around the sensor than in the wiring. The equivalent code for the right front wheel is ABS-0021.
Possible causes
- The wheel has locked while driving, for example due to a sticking brake caliper
- Loose wheel speed sensor or dirt between the sensor and its mounting
- Damaged or dirty tone ring (reluctor) that the sensor reads
- Wheel bearing play or heavy driveshaft vibration
- Faulty wheel speed sensor or a fault in the ABS unit's hydraulic valves
What you can do
- 1Check that the left front brake caliper is not sticking and that the wheel spins freely
- 2Check the wheel bearing for play and noise
- 3Remove the wheel and check that the sensor sits flush in its mounting with no dirt or rust underneath
- 4Check that the tone ring is intact, clean and secure with no missing or damaged teeth
- 5Clear the code and road test; if it returns, have the sensor and ABS unit checked by a workshop
- 6The brakes still work without ABS, but avoid hard braking until the fault is fixed
Symptoms you may notice2
- ABS and traction control warning lamps on
- ABS and traction control do not work
What the fault can affect1
- ABS and traction control are disabled, including the extra traction function on cars that have it
