What does this fault code mean?
The ABS control module has received a faulty signal from the wheel speed sensor on the left front wheel. The sensor tells the module how fast the wheel turns, and when that signal cannot be trusted, ABS, traction control and electronic brake force distribution are switched off. A connector or wiring problem is more often the cause than the sensor itself.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Loose joints or connections in the wiring
- Wiring routed too close to a source of electrical interference
- Damaged insulation on the cables
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the connectors at the sensor and at the ABS control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Inspect the sensor wiring for chafing, pinching and damaged insulation
- 4Check that the sensor wiring is not routed too close to sources of electrical interference
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the sensor and wiring
- 6ABS is safety-critical – do not work on the brake system yourself, have a workshop do it
Symptoms you may notice4
- ABS warning lamp lit
- Traction control warning lamp lit
- Brake system warning lamp lit
- ABS does not operate
What the fault can affect3
- ABS and traction control are blocked
- Electronic brake force distribution is blocked
- The extra traction function is blocked on cars that have it
