What does this fault code mean?
The sensor on the left rear wheel is sending a signal that the ABS control module does not trust. The module has seen the wheel stop or rotate too slowly compared with the other wheels, even though the sensor circuit is intact. The cause is often mechanical, such as a sticking brake or parking brake, or a problem with the sensor and tone ring. The equivalent code for the right rear wheel is ABS-0041.
Possible causes
- The wheel has been locked while driving, for example by a sticking brake or parking brake
- Loose wheel speed sensor or the wrong gap between sensor and tone ring
- Play in the wheel bearing or vibrations in the axle
- Damaged tone ring or a faulty outlet valve in the ABS unit
- Contact resistance, loose connections or signal wires routed too close to a source of interference
What you can do
- 1Verify that the parking brake is not dragging or touching anything
- 2Check that the brake caliper on the left rear wheel is not sticking and the wheel spins freely
- 3Check the wheel bearing for play
- 4Remove the wheel and check that the sensor is fitted firmly against its mounting with no dirt, and that the tone ring is complete and clean
- 5Check the connectors and the cable insulation for damage and contact resistance
- 6ABS is safety-critical – avoid hard braking and have a workshop correct the fault
