What does this fault code mean?
The pump motor in the ABS unit has at times run continuously, failed to start, or stopped sending a signal. The fault is intermittent, meaning it is sporadic and may not be present now. The pump builds brake pressure during ABS regulation, so when it does not work, ABS and related functions are switched off.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections to the pump motor
- Blown fuse for the pump motor
- Loose connector on the pump motor
- Open circuit in the supply or ground wire to the pump motor
- Faulty pump motor or, less commonly, an internal fault in the control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the connectors at the control module and the pump motor have no contact resistance or oxidation
- 2Check the fuse for the pump motor in the engine bay relay and fuse box and replace it if it has blown
- 3Look for open circuits in the wires between the pump motor and its connector, especially if the fault is intermittent
- 4Read the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the pump motor and the control module
- 6ABS is safety-critical – do not work on the ABS unit or the pump motor yourself, have a workshop do it
Symptoms you may notice3
- ABS and traction control warning lamps lit
- ABS does not work
- Traction control does not work
What the fault can affect2
- ABS and traction control are blocked
- The extra traction function is blocked on cars that have it
