What does this fault code mean?
The ABS control module communicates with the other control modules over the car's data network (CAN). At some point it has registered that communication was disturbed or missing, and the fault is intermittent. Because the ABS module is part of the network, the fault can show up in several systems, for example in the speed display.
Possible causes
- Faulty ABS control module
- Temporary interference that interrupted the data exchange
What you can do
- 1Read codes in the other control modules; communication faults often leave codes in several places
- 2Clear the code and check whether it returns; a single intermittent fault can be a temporary disturbance
- 3Check that the battery and its terminals are in good condition, since voltage drops can disturb the data network
- 4If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the data network and the ABS control module
- 5ABS is safety-critical – do not work on the ABS control module yourself, have a workshop do it
Symptoms you may notice4
- ABS warning lamp lit
- Traction control warning lamp lit
- Brake system warning lamp lit
- No speed display, because the signal to the instrument cluster is missing
What the fault can affect3
- Communication on the data network is blocked
- Traction control function is blocked
- The extra traction function is disengaged on cars that have it
