What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has registered that the left front wheel is stopping or turning too slowly compared with the other wheels, or changing speed unnaturally fast. The sensor signal therefore does not match reality. The cause usually lies in the mechanics around the wheel rather than in the electrical circuit.
Possible causes
- The wheel has locked during driving, for example due to a sticking brake caliper
- Loose wheel sensor or an incorrect gap between sensor and tone ring
- Bearing play or axle vibration
- Defective or dirty tone ring
- Defective wheel sensor or dirt between the tone ring and the sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the brake caliper on the left front wheel is not sticking and that the wheel turns freely
- 2Check the wheel bearing for play and noise
- 3Check that the wheel sensor sits flush against the spindle or hub with no dirt underneath
- 4Check that the tone ring is securely fitted, complete and free from damage or missing teeth
- 5Clear the code and road test; if it returns, have a workshop check the sensor. Do not replace the brake control module for this code
- 6The brake system is safety critical: the brakes work without ABS, so drive carefully and avoid hard braking until the fault is fixed
Symptoms you may notice4
- ABS warning lamp on
- Information lamp on
- ABS, traction control and stability function do not work
- With an intermittent fault the ABS lamp may only go out some way into the next drive
What the fault can affect3
- ABS is disabled
- Electronic brake force distribution (EBD) is disabled if two or more wheel sensors have failed
- Traction control, stability control, active yaw control (AYC) and brake assist are disabled
