What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has registered that the signal from the right rear wheel sensor is disturbed or interrupted on many occasions. The cause may be a loose sensor, damaged wiring, a defective tone ring or dirt. The code can be diagnosed while the car is rolling.
Possible causes
- Loose wheel sensor
- Damaged wiring
- Defective tone ring
- Dirt between the tone ring and the wheel sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the wheel sensor sits firmly against the spindle or hub and that there is no dirt between sensor and mounting face
- 2Check that the tone ring is securely fitted and complete, with no scratches or deformation
- 3Check the connectors at the brake control module and the wheel sensor for contact resistance and oxidation, and check the wiring for damage
- 4Clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
- 5The brake system is safety critical: do not replace the brake control module because of this code; have a workshop repair the sensor or tone ring
Symptoms you may notice5
- ABS warning lamp on
- General warning lamp on
- No ABS function
- Traction control and anti-skid do not work
- With an intermittent fault the ABS lamp may only go out some way into the next drive
What the fault can affect3
- ABS is disabled
- Traction control, stability control, active yaw control (AYC) and brake assist are disabled
- Electronic brake force distribution (EBD) is disabled if two or more wheel sensors have failed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
