What does this fault code mean?

The brake control module (BCM) has registered that the ABS pump motor is not starting, or that its signal is absent. The pump motor builds the brake pressure that ABS needs, so without it ABS, stability control and brake assist do not work.

    Possible causes

    • Poor contact in the connections
    • Blown fuse for the pump motor
    • Open circuit in the supply wire to the pump motor
    • Open circuit in the pump motor's ground wire
    • Defective pump motor
    • Faulty brake control module (uncommon)

    What you can do

    1. 1Check the pump motor fuse in the engine bay relay and fuse box, and test the circuit beyond it if the fuse has failed
    2. 2Check the connectors at the brake control module and the pump motor for contact resistance and oxidation
    3. 3Run the pump motor with diagnostic equipment and check that it starts and appears to run normally
    4. 4The brake system is safety critical: do not work on the hydraulic unit or pump motor yourself; have a workshop repair the fault

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • General warning lamp on
    • ABS warning lamp on
    • ABS, traction control and stability function do not work
    • Anti-skid does not work
    • If the fault is intermittent, the ABS lamp may only go out some way into the next drive

    What the fault can affect2

    • ABS, traction control, stability control and brake assist are disabled
    • The brakes still work but without ABS regulation

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
