What does this fault code mean?

The brake control module receives information about the selected gear, from the central electronic module on manual gearboxes or from the transmission control module on automatics. When reverse is selected, the stability function must not be able to activate. The code is set if the signal is disturbed or missing, or if it indicates reverse while the car is moving forward for a while.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit or short in the circuit to the reversing light switch on manual gearboxes
    • Interference or a short on the CAN wire
    • Gear selector position fault registered by the transmission control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Check whether codes for communication or the reversing lights are stored in the central electronic module and fault-find those first
    2. 2Check the wiring and connectors for the gearbox on automatic gearboxes
    3. 3Check the gearbox signal with diagnostic equipment
    4. 4The brake system is safety critical: do not replace the brake control module for this code, and have a workshop repair the fault

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • No noticeable symptoms

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
