What does this fault code mean?

The pedal position sensor gives the brake control module information about the brake pedal position and how quickly the pedal is pressed. These signals are needed to judge how much braking force is required, and on cars without active brake assist they are also used to check the brake light switch. The code is set when the signal from the sensor is implausible.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit in the wiring
    • Wiring shorted to ground or supply voltage
    • Incorrectly fitted pedal position sensor
    • Defective pedal position sensor
    • Defective brake control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the connectors at the brake control module and the pedal position sensor are secure and free from oxidation
    2. 2Check that the pedal position sensor is correctly fitted and undamaged
    3. 3Read the codes in the engine control module and the central electronic module, as codes for the brake light switch may be stored there
    4. 4The brake system is safety critical: do not work on the pedal position sensor yourself, and have a workshop repair the fault

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • General yellow warning lamp on

    What the fault can affect2

    • Active brake assist (BA) is disabled
    • Traction control (TC) on the rear wheels is disabled

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
