What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has detected an electrical fault in one of the valve coils in the hydraulic unit, in this case the inlet valve for the right rear wheel. The valves control how brake pressure builds up at each wheel. If the signal from the coil is too low, too high or missing, the module cannot regulate braking correctly. The fault can only be detected once the module's test has started with the ignition on.
Possible causes
- Internal fault in the brake control module
- Poor contact or corrosion at the connector on the hydraulic unit or the module
- Open or short circuit in the wire to the valve coil
- Temporary electrical interference that makes the module's calculation incorrect
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the battery is in good condition and that its terminals are tight, as low voltage can cause false internal faults
- 3Check the brake system fuses and that the connectors at the brake control module are secure and free from corrosion
- 4With diagnostic equipment activate the hydraulic unit valves and check that they respond
- 5If the fault returns despite this, the brake control module normally needs replacing by a workshop
- 6Do not work on the brake hydraulic unit or the module yourself; leave this to a workshop. The brakes still work but without ABS, so drive carefully until the fault is fixed
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning lamp and brake system warning lamp on
- Traction control, stability control and anti-skid function do not work
- Adaptive cruise control, collision warning and auto brake do not work
- Yellow warning symbol or red symbol with a message in the display
- Electronic parking brake has reduced function
What the fault can affect2
- Active yaw control (AYC) is blocked
- ABS, traction control, stability control and brake assistance can be disabled
