What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has detected that the voltage supplied to the ABS pump motor is incorrect. The pump motor sits in the hydraulic unit and builds the brake pressure needed for ABS, stability control and brake assistance. The check only runs once the car has been moving, so the fault is usually noticed while driving.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidation in the connections to the pump motor and the brake control module
- Blown fuse for the pump motor
- Open circuit in the supply or ground wire to the pump motor
- Damaged pump motor
- Faulty brake control module (uncommon)
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the pump motor fuse in the engine bay fuse box; if it has blown, check the circuit for a short to ground before a new fuse is fitted
- 3Check the connectors at the brake control module and the pump motor for poor contact and oxidation
- 4With diagnostic equipment run the pump motor and check that it starts and runs normally
- 5Do not work on the brake hydraulic unit or pump motor yourself; leave this to a workshop
Symptoms you may notice3
- General warning lamp on
- ABS warning lamp on
- ABS, traction control and stability function do not work
What the fault can affect2
- ABS, traction control, stability control and brake assistance are disabled
- The brakes still work but without ABS regulation
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
