What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has received a disturbed or interrupted signal from the left front wheel speed sensor many times. The sensor reads a tone wheel on the wheel hub, and the fault is most often mechanical: a loose sensor, a damaged tone wheel or dirt between the tone wheel and the sensor. The code is not caused by an internal fault in the module.
Possible causes
- Loose wheel speed sensor
- Damaged or dirty tone wheel
- Dirt or metal particles between the tone wheel and the sensor
- Damaged wiring or connectors to the sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Make sure the wheel sensor sits tight against its mounting and that grit or rust is not trapped underneath it
- 3Check that the tone wheel is intact, clean and secure, with no missing or damaged teeth
- 4Check that the brake calipers and wheel bearings are not sticking or have play, as a locked wheel gives no signal
- 5Do not replace the brake control module, as it is normally not the fault. Have a workshop check the connectors and wiring with diagnostic equipment
- 6The braking system is safety critical: do not work on the ABS system yourself, and drive carefully until the fault is fixed
Symptoms you may notice5
- ABS warning lamp and general warning lamp on
- ABS, traction control and stability function do not work
- Adaptive cruise control and collision warning do not work
- Electronic parking brake has reduced function
- Front monitoring and City Safety do not work
What the fault can affect2
- ABS, traction control, stability control and brake assistance are blocked
- Electronic brake force distribution is disabled if two or more wheel sensors stop working
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
