What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has received a disturbed or interrupted signal from the left front wheel speed sensor many times. The sensor reads the wheel speed from a tone wheel, and the ABS and several stability functions use this information. The fault is electrical and most often lies in the wiring or the sensor connectors, but the sensor itself can also be the cause.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open or short circuit in the wires to the wheel sensor
- Damaged wheel speed sensor
- Wires shorted to each other
- Internal fault in the brake control module
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the battery is in good condition, as voltage drops can cause false signals
- 3Check the connector at the left front wheel sensor and at the brake control module for looseness, moisture and oxidation
- 4Follow the cable from the sensor into the wheel arch and look for chafing, pinching and loose clips
- 5Read the wheel speed with diagnostic equipment and check the wiring and sensor if the fault remains
- 6The braking system is safety critical: do not work on the sensor or the ABS system yourself, and drive carefully until the fault is fixed
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning lamp and ABS warning lamp on
- Brake system warning lamp on
- ABS, traction control and stability function do not work
- Adaptive cruise control and collision warning do not work
- Front monitoring and City Safety do not work
What the fault can affect2
- ABS, traction control, stability control and brake assistance are blocked
- Electronic brake force distribution is disabled if several wheel sensors stop working
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
