What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has registered that the wheel at the left front is turning too slowly or stopping compared with the car's speed, or that the wheel speed is changing unrealistically fast. The fault is mechanical and relates to the sensor, the tone wheel or the wheel bearing rather than the wiring. The code is not caused by an internal fault in the module.
Possible causes
- The wheel has locked while driving
- Loose wheel speed sensor or incorrect gap between the sensor and the tone wheel
- Wheel bearing play or vibration from the driveshaft
- Damaged tone wheel or damaged wheel speed sensor
- Dirt between the tone wheel and the sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the brake caliper at the left front wheel is not sticking and that the wheel spins freely
- 3Check that the wheel bearing has no play or sticking, and that there is no vibration coming from the driveshaft
- 4Make sure the wheel sensor sits tight against its mounting and that no grit gets between the sensor and the tone wheel
- 5Check that the tone wheel is complete, clean and undamaged. Do not replace the brake control module, as it is normally not the fault
- 6The braking system is safety critical: do not work on the brakes or ABS system yourself, have a workshop do it, and drive carefully until the fault is fixed
Symptoms you may notice5
- ABS warning lamp and general warning lamp on
- ABS, traction control and stability function do not work
- Traction control does not work
- Adaptive cruise control and collision warning do not work
- Front monitoring and City Safety do not work
What the fault can affect2
- ABS, traction control, stability control and brake assistance are blocked
- Electronic brake force distribution is disabled if two or more wheel sensors stop working
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
