What does this fault code mean?

The brake control module (BCM) has registered that the signal from the wheel sensor at the right rear wheel is disturbed or interrupted many times. The sensor reads the wheel speed from a tone wheel, and ABS and several stability functions use this information. The fault is electrical and most often lies in the wiring or connectors, but the sensor or an internal disturbance in the module can also be the cause.

    Possible causes

    • Poor contact in the connections
    • Open or short circuit in the supply wire to the wheel sensor
    • Open or short circuit to ground or supply voltage in the signal wire
    • Damaged wheel speed sensor
    • Internal fault in the brake control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the connectors at the wheel sensor and at the brake control module are secure and free from oxidation
    3. 3Follow the cable from the sensor into the wheel arch and check for breaks, chafing and short circuits to ground or supply voltage
    4. 4Read the wheel speed with diagnostic equipment, as a good contact shows the value updating
    5. 5Replace the sensor or repair the wiring as needed, then clear the code
    6. 6The braking system is safety critical: do not work on the ABS system or the wheel sensor yourself; leave this to a workshop, and drive carefully until the fault is fixed

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • General warning lamp and ABS warning lamp on
    • ABS, anti-spin and stability function do not work
    • Adaptive cruise control and collision warning do not work
    • Cruise control will not engage
    • Front monitoring and City Safety do not work

    What the fault can affect2

    • ABS, traction control, stability control and brake assistance are blocked
    • Active yaw control (AYC) is blocked

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
