What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has registered that the brake light switch is not activated when the brake pedal is pressed, even though brake pressure rises. The switch sits at the brake pedal and provides the signal to the braking system. The fault most often lies in the switch itself and not in the brake control module.
Possible causes
- Mechanical fault in the brake light switch
- Poor contact or oxidation in the switch at the brake pedal
What you can do
- 1Check that the brake light switch fuse is intact; its location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Press the brake pedal down and release it a few times, and check that the brake lights come on and go off
- 3Check that the switch at the brake pedal is secure and free from oxidation, and that the pedal moves freely
- 4Check that the brake pedal is not sticking or blocked by an object beneath it
- 5The braking system is safety critical: have a workshop read the switch with diagnostic equipment and replace it if needed, and drive carefully until the fault is fixed
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
