What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) receives the brake light switch signal over the car's data network, from the engine control module (ECM) and the central electronic module (CEM). When the signal is missing, the fault may lie in those modules or in the wiring between them, not in the brake control module.
Possible causes
- Fault in the engine control module (ECM)
- Fault in the central electronic module (CEM)
- Break in the wiring on the data network
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the engine control module and the central electronic module, as they are often linked to this fault
- 2Check the car's fuses and the battery condition, as voltage drops can disturb the data network
- 3With diagnostic equipment check the data network and the connectors between the modules
- 4The braking system is safety critical: do not replace the brake control module before the other modules are checked
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
