What does this fault code mean?

The vacuum pressure sensor in the brake booster has sent a signal that the brake control module judges to be implausible. The sensor measures the vacuum the brake booster uses to assist braking, so the fault can affect the braking assistance.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit in the signal wire
    • Signal wire shorted to supply voltage or ground
    • Damaged vacuum pressure sensor
    • Internal fault in the brake control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
    2. 2Start the engine and have a workshop read the vacuum pressures with diagnostic equipment while the pedal is pressed
    3. 3With the engine off, press the brake pedal firmly and hold it, then read the vacuum pressures again; they should match the first reading
    4. 4If the vacuum pressures do not agree, the vacuum sensor needs replacing by a workshop
    5. 5The braking system is safety critical: do not work on the brake booster yourself; leave this to a workshop, and drive carefully until the fault is fixed

    Symptoms you may notice2
