What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has received a signal from the pedal position sensor that it judges to be implausible. The sensor is part of active brake assistance, and on cars without it, the sensor is used to check the brake light switch.
Possible causes
- Break in the wires
- Wires shorted to ground or supply voltage
- Incorrectly fitted pedal position sensor
- Damaged pedal position sensor
- Internal fault in the brake control module
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Read the codes in the engine control module and the central electronic module first, as the fault may have been caused in the brake light circuit
- 3Check the connector at the pedal position sensor and at the brake control module for oxidation, contact resistance and looseness
- 4Check that the sensor is correctly seated and that the wiring has no break or short circuit
- 5Replace the pedal position sensor if it is damaged, and do not replace the brake control module before the fault has been investigated
- 6The braking system is safety critical: do not work on the pedal position sensor or brake booster yourself; leave this to a workshop, and drive carefully until the fault is fixed
Symptoms you may notice2
- General warning lamp on
- Brake assistance during hard braking may not work
What the fault can affect1
- Brake assistance (BA) is blocked
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
