What does this fault code mean?

The brake control module (BCM) compares the steering angle from the steering angle sensor with a calculated correction value for the sensor's individual deviation. When the calculated value conflicts with where the wheel is pointing, the code is set. The fault most often comes from the steering wheel or front axle not being set up correctly, not from the brake control module.

    Possible causes

    • Steering wheel incorrectly fitted

    What you can do

    1. 1Make sure the front axle is correctly aligned and that the steering wheel is correctly fitted before doing anything else
    2. 2Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
    3. 3Read the steering angle with diagnostic equipment when the wheel is straight ahead and at left and right lock
    4. 4When the wheel angle reading is off, a workshop zeroes it and recalibrates the stability system
    5. 5Steering and the stability system are safety critical: do not work on them yourself; leave this to a workshop, and drive carefully until the fault is fixed

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Traction control warning lamp on
    • Stability function does not work
    • Traction control does not work
    • Adaptive cruise control and collision warning do not work
    • Cruise control will not engage

    What the fault can affect2

    • Traction control and stability control can be disabled
    • Active yaw control (AYC) is blocked

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
