Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
1 modelXC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) could not initialise its CAN controller when the module was powered up. The CAN controller handles communication on the car's data network, so without it the BCM cannot send or receive information from other control modules. The code most often means an internal fault in the brake control module.
Possible causes
- Internal fault in the brake control module
What you can do
- 1Read the codes and check the connectors at the brake control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2After checking, switch the ignition off and on, wait a moment, then read the code status
- 3If the code has a permanent status, the brake control module needs replacing and programming by a workshop
- 4The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out all work on the module
Symptoms you may notice3

- Stability function does not work
- Anti-skid function does not work
What the fault can affect2
- Traction control, stability control and dynamic stability control (AYC) are disabled
