What does this fault code mean?
The brake light switch, located at the brake pedal, signals when the brakes are being applied. The brake control module receives the signal over the data network and compares it with the brake pressure. The code is set when brake pressure rises during braking without the brake light switch signal changing, which can only be detected while driving above a certain speed.
Possible causes
- Mechanical fault in the sensor at the brake pedal
- Fault in the brake control module, but not an internal hardware fault
- Interference in the signal on the data network
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Check that the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is pressed and that the pedal moves freely
- 3Clear the code and road test the car; if it returns, have a workshop check the sensor at the brake pedal
- 4The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop read the codes in the brake control module and central electronic module before replacing any part
Symptoms you may notice1
- No clear symptoms for the driver
