What does this fault code mean?
Control modules in the car send and receive information continuously over the CAN data network. The brake control module (BCM) has registered a serious disturbance that blocks the communication, and the module cannot then be reached. The code can therefore only be read out when the fault is intermittent.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the brake control module
- Internal fault in another module on the same part of the CAN network
- Interference on the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read codes in the central electronic module; if communication fault codes are stored there, troubleshoot those first
- 2Measure the CAN wires against ground, against supply voltage and against each other, looking for shorts and open circuits
- 3Have a workshop disconnect modules sharing the network one at a time to see which one disturbs it, as the fault may lie in another module
- 4Repair the wiring, or replace the module that is communicating incorrectly
- 5The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out all work on the communication and the module
Symptoms you may notice5
- ABS warning lamp lit
- ABS does not work
- Message in the text display
- Brake circuit warning lamp lit
- Traction control warning lamp lit
What the fault can affect3
- The module switches itself off and stays off until the power supply is broken and restored
- Traction control and stability control are disabled
- Dynamic stability control (AYC) is disabled
