What does this fault code mean?
The brake module gets a message about which gear is selected. With reverse engaged the stability function should not be able to activate, but the code is set when the signal is missing or when reverse is engaged while the car is moving forwards. The code therefore points to faulty gear information from the selector or gearbox, not to a fault in the brake control module.
Possible causes
- Manual gearbox: fault in the central electronic module (CEM)
- Automatic gearbox: fault in the transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Establish whether the car has a manual or automatic gearbox and troubleshoot the correct module
- 2Manual gearbox: read and troubleshoot the codes in the central electronic module
- 3Automatic gearbox: read and troubleshoot the codes in the transmission control module
- 4Road test the car and check that the correct gear is shown and that reverse does not give a false signal when driving forwards
- 5The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out any work on the modules
Symptoms you may notice5
- Traction control warning lamp lit
- Brake circuit warning lamp lit
- Stability function does not work
- Traction control does not work
- Anti-skid function does not work
What the fault can affect3
- Stability control is disabled
- Traction control is disabled
- Dynamic stability control (AYC) is disabled
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
