What does this fault code mean?

Control modules in the car send and receive information via CAN, a standardised serial communication method. The brake control module (BCM) has detected that the communication on the CAN network is disturbed by another module, or that its own messages are disturbing the network. The fault can only be read out when it is intermittent.

    Possible causes

    • Short circuit between the CAN wires
    • Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
    • Internal fault in the brake control module
    • Internal fault in another module on the same part of the CAN network

    What you can do

    1. 1Read codes in the central electronic module; if it shows a loss of power to a module, troubleshoot that module first
    2. 2Measure the CAN wires against ground, against supply voltage and against each other, looking for shorts and open circuits
    3. 3Have a workshop disconnect modules on the network one at a time to identify the one causing the disturbance, and replace it if it communicates incorrectly
    4. 4Clear the codes and check whether the communication fault returns after a road test
    5. 5The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out all work on the network and the modules

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • ABS warning lamp lit and ABS does not work
    • Brake circuit does not function and the warning lamp is lit
    • Traction control warning lamp lit
    • Traction and stability functions do not work
    • Adaptive cruise control, collision warning and the electronic parking brake work incompletely

    What the fault can affect2

    • The brake control module switches itself off and stays off until the power supply is broken and restored
    • Dynamic stability control (AYC) is disabled

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
