What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) cannot make contact with the engine control module (ECM) on the CAN network, or the communication is disturbed. The stability functions and cruise control then cannot receive engine information. The fault most often comes from interference or temporary breaks on the CAN network rather than from an internal fault in the brake control module.
Possible causes
- Interference or intermittent breaks on the CAN network
- Fault in the engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Read codes in the central electronic module and any other affected modules first, and correct them before this code is cleared
- 2If no codes are stored, check the CAN wiring between the brake control module and the engine control module for breaks and shorts
- 3Check that the wiring is not routed too close to sources of interference, such as mobile phones
- 4Clear this code only once the other codes are corrected, and check that it does not return after a road test
- 5The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out any work on the wiring and the modules
Symptoms you may notice5
- Traction control warning lamp lit
- Stability function does not work
- Traction control does not work
- Anti-skid function does not work
- Adaptive cruise control does not work
What the fault can affect3
- Stability control is disabled
- Traction control is disabled
- Dynamic stability control (AYC) is disabled
