System
Brake Control Module (BCM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
1 modelXC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) is not receiving confirmation from the all-wheel drive control module (DEM) that the all-wheel drive is working. The fault applies to cars with all-wheel drive and DSTC. The stability function must not be activated in all-wheel drive, so when the signal is missing the stability systems are switched off. The fault most often lies in the all-wheel drive module or in the data network.
Possible causes
- Fault in the all-wheel drive control module (DEM)
- Interference or intermittent breaks on the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read codes in the central electronic module first, as this fault often follows other communication faults
- 2Read and troubleshoot codes in the all-wheel drive control module
- 3If the fault is intermittent only, clear the code and check that it does not return
- 4Check that the all-wheel drive module has the latest software; programming is carried out by a workshop according to procedure
- 5The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out all work on the network and the modules
Symptoms you may notice4
- General warning lamp on
- Traction control does not work
- Stability function does not work
- Anti-skid function does not work
What the fault can affect3
- Stability control is disabled
- Traction control is disabled, including all-wheel drive traction control, without any warning lamp coming on
- Dynamic stability control (AYC) is disabled
