Brake Control Module (BCM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
1 modelXC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) is factory-programmed for several vehicle models and reads the vehicle configuration from the central electronic module (CEM) at the first ignition cycle. The code is set when the configuration does not match the car, for example if a module from another model has been fitted. It mainly applies to cars with a stability system.
Possible causes
- Brake control module from another vehicle model has been fitted
- Central electronic module from another vehicle model has been fitted
- Software written for another vehicle model has been loaded into the brake control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the correct central electronic module is fitted in the car
- 2Read the vehicle configuration from the central electronic module using the workshop service and check that it has the correct software for the car
- 3If the brake control module has been tested in another car, the code may have been stored; clear the codes and check that it does not return
- 4If the configuration is wrong, a workshop needs to reset and configure the brake control module
- 5The brake and stability systems are safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out all work on the modules
Symptoms you may notice4
- General warning lamp on
- Anti-skid function does not work
- Stability function does not work
- Traction control does not work
What the fault can affect1
- Traction control, stability control and dynamic stability control (AYC) are disabled
