BCM-U040164
VOLVO
BCM-U040164 - Invalid data received from engine control module (ECM). Algorithm error. Signal outside permitted range
System
Brake Control Module (BCM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
1 modelXC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
Over CAN, the ECM tells the BCM whether its engine speed reading is valid. The BCM uses the engine speed signal when regulating the stability function. The code is set when the engine control module reports that the engine speed signal is implausible. It only applies to cars with STC/DSTC and can be read once the engine has been started.
Possible causes
- Fault in the engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Read codes in the central electronic module first and troubleshoot them
- 2Read codes in the engine control module and troubleshoot them according to their information
- 3Do not replace the brake control module for this code, as the fault is engine-related
- 4The brake and stability systems are safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out any work on the engine management and the brake control module
Symptoms you may notice4
- General warning lamp on
- Anti-skid function does not work
- Stability function does not work
- Traction control does not work
What the fault can affect1
- Traction control, stability control and dynamic stability control (AYC) are disabled
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
