VOLVO
BCM-U040482 - Invalid data received from transmission control module (TCM). Bus/message error. Sequence counter not correct or not updated
System
Brake Control Module (BCM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
1 modelXC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The brake module is told which gear is selected, and with reverse engaged the stability function must not be able to activate. The code is set if that signal is disturbed or missing, or if reverse is reported while the car has been moving forwards for over a second. It only applies to cars with DSTC and can be read at a certain speed when driving straight ahead.
Possible causes
- Open circuit or short circuit in the circuit to the reverse light switch on manual gearboxes
- Interference on the CAN network
- Short circuit or open circuit in a CAN wire
What you can do
- 1Read codes in the central electronic module and troubleshoot any codes for communication or reverse lights there first
- 2Check that the reverse lights work only with reverse engaged; if so, the function is working and the code may be from an earlier fault
- 3Manual gearbox: have a workshop check the reverse gear switch on the gearbox
- 4Automatic gearbox: have a workshop check the gearbox function and the gear selector
- 5The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out any work on the modules and the wiring
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
