What does this fault code mean?

The seat heating module for the right front seat uses a sensor in the seat to regulate the heat, and reports to the climate control module (CCM) when that sensor is not working. The fault lies in the wire between the module and the sensor, which may be broken or short-circuited to ground or voltage. The front seat heat is then unregulated.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit in the wire between the seat heating module (SHM) and the sensor
    • Short to ground in the wire from the seat heating module (SHM) to the sensor
    • Short to voltage in the wire from the seat heating module (SHM) to the sensor
    • Open circuit in the wire from the right front seat (SHMR) to the sensor
    • Short to ground in the wire from the right front seat (SHMR) to the sensor
    • Short to voltage in the wire from the right front seat (SHMR) to the sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact, especially the fuse for the seat heating
    2. 2Start the engine, switch on the seat heating and see whether the seat becomes warm within a short while
    3. 3Check the wire between the seat and the seat heating module for chafing and breaks, and that the connectors are firmly seated
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the sensor is not broken and has no contact with ground (the body) or with voltage
    5. 5With diagnostic equipment, follow the current temperature of the right front seat heating in live data. The value should change when the heat is switched on and off
    6. 6If the wire is intact but the fault remains, have a workshop replace the sensor in the seat

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The electric heating in the front seat does not work
    • The front seat heating does not work or gets too hot

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
