What does this fault code mean?

The central electronic module (CEM) monitors the water temperature sensor in the heater. A short to ground in the sensor line is read by the control unit as a fault, and the code is set, which only shows when the heater is active. The fault appears as poor heating in the passenger compartment.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire short-circuited to ground
    • Defective water temperature sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the code, clear it and start the heater to see whether the fault returns
    2. 2If you have a diagnostic tool, read the water temperature in live data and compare it with the engine temperature once the engine is warm
    3. 3Check that the connectors at the control unit and the sensor are secure and free from corrosion
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check the water temperature sensor wires for contact with ground (the body), testing one wire at a time
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool, watch the water temperature in live data as the engine warms up; if the value does not rise smoothly, a workshop should replace the sensor

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Poor heating in the passenger compartment

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
