Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C30 Electric (2011–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The steering lock can only be locked when the car is still, the engine is off and the key is out of the ignition. The CEM checks the lock status and controls its power supply, and the fault code is set when the CEM registers an internal fault or a fault in its own power supply. The code is part of a larger fault-tracing for the symptom that the starter motor does not turn.
Possible causes
- Internal fault in the CEM
- Fault in the power supply to the CEM
What you can do
- 1If the starter motor does not turn, troubleshoot the starting system first, for example the battery and fuses
- 2Function test: take the key out and check that the lock status changes to locked; insert the key and check that it changes to unlocked
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the steering lock status in live data in both positions and check that the values match the position
- 4Check the power supply connections to the CEM at the engine compartment fuse box, and use a multimeter to check the wires for breaks or contact with ground (the body)
- 5If nothing else is found, a workshop should replace the CEM, as the fault is probably internal
Symptoms you may notice2
- Steering lock does not lock or unlock
- Starter motor does not operate
