CEM-B102611 - Steering Column Lock. General Electrical Failures. Circuit short to ground
System
Central Electronic Module (CEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsV40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The steering column lock control unit is powered through a relay that is controlled by the central electronic module (CEM). The fault code is stored when the voltage to the relay is too low, which here is because the relay is shorted to earth. The steering column lock then does not work.
Possible causes
- Relay for the steering column lock control unit shorted to earth
What you can do
- 1The steering lock is part of the steering, so if it sticks or does not unlock, do not drive the car until a workshop has checked it
- 2Check that the fuses for the relay and the steering lock are intact
- 3With the ignition on, check the wiring to the relay for chafing, pinching and loose connections
- 4With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check whether the wire to the relay has contact with earth (the body)
- 5Remedy the short circuit if found, clear the fault code, and if the steering lock still fails, have a workshop check the relay and control unit
Symptoms you may notice2
- The starter motor does not turn over, and there is no click when starting is attempted
- The steering column lock does not work
