VOLVO
CEM-B102612 - Steering Column Lock. General Electrical Failures. Circuit short to battery
System
Central Electronic Module (CEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsV40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The steering column lock control unit is powered through a relay controlled by the central electronic module (CEM). The fault code is stored when the voltage to the relay is too high, which here is because the relay is shorted to battery voltage. The steering column lock then does not work as it should.
Possible causes
- Relay for the steering column lock control unit shorted to battery voltage
What you can do
- 1Because the steering lock is linked to the steering, do not take a chance with a lock that does not unlock. Have a workshop check it before driving
- 2Check that the fuse for the relay is intact
- 3With the ignition off, check the wire from the relay to the steering lock for chafing and pinching, especially where it may have touched a live wire
- 4With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check whether the wire to the relay has voltage. Voltage with the ignition off means a short to battery voltage
- 5Remedy the fault and clear the fault code. If the steering lock still does not work, have a workshop check the relay and the control unit
Symptoms you may notice2
- The starter motor does not turn over, and there is no click when starting is attempted
- The steering column lock does not work
