What does this fault code mean?
This fault concerns the electronics of the steering column lock and the relay that powers it. The fault is stored when the voltage to the steering lock control unit is too low or too high, or when the central electronic module (CEM) reports an internal fault. The steering lock and the starting function can then be affected.
Possible causes
- Blown fuse for the power supply to the steering lock relay
- Internal fault inside the CEM
- Wire between the CEM and the steering lock control unit shorted to the battery
What you can do
- 1The steering lock is part of the steering. If in doubt about the steering, have a workshop check the car before you drive it
- 2Check first that the fuse for the steering lock relay supply is intact, and replace it if it has blown
- 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check whether the wire between the CEM and the steering lock has voltage. Voltage then means a short to the battery
- 4If the fault is temporary, clearing the fault code and taking a drive may be enough. Follow up in case it returns
- 5If it returns, have a workshop establish whether the fault is in the wire or in the CEM, since an internal CEM fault cannot be fixed by the owner
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine does not start, or starts unreliably, with a clicking sound when starting is attempted
- The steering column lock does not work
- A message and a warning symbol appear in the display
