Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
8 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The fault code shows that the steering column lock control unit reaches a different conclusion from the central electronic module (CEM) about whether the engine is off and the car is stationary when locking is requested. It points to an unwanted event rather than a fault in the car, but the lock cannot lock during the same drive cycle.
Possible causes
- No real fault in the car. The code relates to an unwanted event that normally needs no action
- Internal fault in the steering column lock control unit (SCL)
What you can do
- 1The fault code normally needs no action on the car. Clear it and check whether it returns the next time the car is locked
- 2The steering lock is part of the steering. If it does not lock or unlock as it should, do not drive the car until a workshop has checked it
- 3Check whether there are other fault codes in the car, and deal with them first if there are
- 4If it returns, use a multimeter with the ignition off to check the steering lock wire for earth contact or a break, then have a workshop fix it
Symptoms you may notice3
- The steering lock does not work
- Amber warning symbol and text message in the display
- The engine does not start, or starts only unreliably
What the fault can affect1
- The steering lock is not allowed to lock during the same drive cycle in which the fault was recorded
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
