Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
8 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The central electronic module (CEM) and the steering column lock control unit (SCL) send messages with sequence numbers to check that communication is in order. The fault code is stored when a message from the steering lock control unit has no sequence number. This can affect both the steering lock and starting.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Loose connections in the connectors
- Internal fault in the steering column lock control unit (SCL)
- Internal fault inside the CEM
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors to the steering lock and the CEM for contact resistance, oxidation and looseness, and gently move the wiring with the ignition on
- 2Check the steering lock with the key: key in, the lock should release and the wheel turn; key out, it should lock. Do this with the car stationary
- 3Clear the fault code and road test to see whether it returns
- 4If it returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the control units, since communication faults are not visible in a simple check
- 5The steering lock is part of the steering. If it does not work as it should, have a workshop check it before driving
Symptoms you may notice3
- The starter motor does not turn over, and there is either no click or a clicking sound when starting is attempted
- The engine does not start, or starts unreliably, at times or all the time
- Amber warning symbol and text message in the display
