Applies to the following models:
2 modelsV40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The central electronic module (CEM) and the steering column lock control unit (SCL) share a LIN bus. The fault code is stored when the message the steering lock sends on the bus is incorrect, which can affect starting and the steering lock.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or loose connections in connectors or joints
- Damaged steering column lock control unit (SCL)
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors and wiring to the steering lock for oxidation, looseness and contact resistance, and gently move them with the ignition on
- 2With a diagnostic tool, check for other fault codes in the same control unit that end in 86 or 88, and deal with them first
- 3Clear the fault code and road test. If it returns, have a workshop check the steering lock control unit, since this needs diagnostic equipment and may need new software
- 4The steering lock is part of the steering. If it does not work as it should, have a workshop check it before driving
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine does not start, or starts only unreliably
- The starter motor does not turn over, and there is either no click or a clicking sound when starting is attempted
- Amber warning symbol and text message in the display
