What does this fault code mean?
Central electronic module (CEM) checks communication with the steering column lock control unit (SCL) when the steering lock is to be locked or unlocked. The fault code is stored when the reply does not arrive. The steering lock then cannot be controlled, and starting can be affected.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or loose connections in connectors or joints
- Damaged steering column lock control unit (SCL)
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors and wires to the steering lock for oxidation and looseness, and gently move the wiring with the ignition on
- 2Other fault codes in the same control unit ending in 86 or 88 point to the bus, so deal with them first, even if a diagnostic tool is needed to see them
- 3Test the steering lock with the key: lock and unlock it, and check that the wheel can turn when the lock opens. Do this with the car stationary
- 4The steering lock is part of the steering. If it sticks or does not work, have a workshop check it before driving
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine does not start, or starts only unreliably
