CEM-B104422 - Rear Axle Sensor. General Signal Failures. Signal too high

Central Electronic Module (CEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
7 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The central electronic module (CEM) monitors the rear axle level sensor. The signal from the sensor is higher than the permitted range compared with the supply voltage, which the CEM treats as a fault. The headlight height and side adjustment are therefore affected by the wrong value.
Possible causes
- The signal cable to the rear sensor is shorted to battery voltage
- Open circuit in the ground lead to the sensor
- Damaged sensor
What you can do
- 1Read off and note the code, clear it and carry out a short test drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses for the headlight level control are intact
- 3Check that the connector at the rear sensor is fully engaged and not corroded, and that the cable is not chafed
- 4Use a multimeter (ignition on, connector unplugged) to check that the signal wire is not connected to battery voltage
- 5With a diagnostic tool, watch the rear sensor value in live data as the rear is pressed: it should change smoothly, not stay at its highest value
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the wiring and the sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Headlight side adjustment does not follow the steering wheel
- Headlight height adjustment does not work or is set wrongly
What the fault can affect2
- The headlight beam stays at a fixed level instead of being adjusted
- Side adjustment stays fixed straight ahead
