CEM-B10E515 - Engine control module (ECM) wake-up signal. General Electrical Failures. Circuit short to battery or open
System
Central Electronic Module (CEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The CEM supervises the start signal sent on to the engine control module (ECM), and also watches the voltage on that signal cable. The code is stored when the cable has a break or touches supply voltage. The engine may then have difficulty starting or not start at all, and the fault may come and go.
Possible causes
- The signal cable is short-circuited to supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal cable
What you can do
- 1Check that the relevant fuses are intact. Their locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Look for chafing and pinch damage on the signal cable between the control modules
- 3Use a multimeter to check whether the signal cable has voltage when it should not
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is continuous, with no break in it
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the wiring and the control module
Symptoms you may notice4
- Engine does not start, either sometimes or always
- Starter motor does not turn over and no clicking sound is heard at a start attempt
- Starter motor does not turn over, but there is a clicking sound at a start attempt
- Starting problems happen sometimes or always
