CEM-B13BD09 - Steering Wheel Heater Module. General Failure Information. Component Failures
System
Central Electronic Module (CEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
7 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The CEM supplies the steering wheel heater control module (HSWM) through a relay. The steering wheel control module (SWM) measures the temperature in the wheel and sends a diagnostic signal to the CEM when it detects a fault in the steering wheel heating system, and the fault code is then set. The fault may lie in the HSWM, in the steering wheel control module, in the wiring between them, or in the heating element in the rim.
Possible causes
- Internal fault in the steering wheel heater control module (HSWM)
- No power supply to the steering wheel heater control module (HSWM)
- Internal fault in the steering wheel control module (SWM)
- Fault on the private LIN bus between the steering wheel control module and the steering wheel heater control module
- The heating element in the rim is short-circuited or open
- The signal wire to the temperature sensor in the rim is short-circuited or open
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read the freeze frame data of the fault code and note which fault is indicated
- 2Check the fuse for the steering wheel heater and that the relay supplies the steering wheel heater control module
- 3Check the wiring between the steering wheel control module and the steering wheel heater control module for breaks, chafing and loose connectors
- 4With the connectors disconnected, use a multimeter to check that the heating element wires are intact and not short-circuited
- 5If no fault is found, have a workshop check the steering wheel control module and the heater control module, as one of them will probably need replacing
Symptoms you may notice1
- The steering wheel heater does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The steering wheel heater switches off for the rest of the current driving cycle
- After several driving cycles with a detected fault, the steering wheel heater is switched off permanently until the fault code has been remedied
