CEM-B1A5511 - Crash record output. General Electrical Failures. Circuit short to ground
System
Central Electronic Module (CEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
7 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The CEM sends the crash signal to the engine control module (ECM) and checks the signal at the output. The fault is stored when the signal is too low, which is caused by a signal wire short-circuited to earth or poor contact in the connections. The fault can stop the engine from starting.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- The signal wire is short-circuited to earth
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Check the connectors in the signal wire between the CEM and the engine control module: loose or oxidised connectors should be cleaned and pressed in
- 3Check the signal wire for chafing and pinch damage
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with earth when the connectors are disconnected
- 5Do not work on the crash signal wiring yourself, as it belongs to the airbag system: have a workshop check it
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start, or the starter does not turn over, sometimes or always
- No clicking sound when starting is attempted
What the fault can affect3
- The function switches off during the driving cycle in which the fault is detected
- If the fault remains, the function is switched off permanently after 100 driving cycles where the fault was detected
- Erasing the fault codes and starting a new driving cycle resets the output
