What does this fault code mean?
The brake light switch registers braking even when no one is pressing the brake, because it has stuck in an active position. The fault is only logged once it recurs over several locking and unlocking cycles of the car with the remote. The cause may be a switch that is incorrectly fitted, damaged or jammed.
Possible causes
- The brake light switch has jammed
- The brake light switch is damaged
- The brake light switch is incorrectly fitted
What you can do
- 1Check whether the brake lights come on when nobody is pressing the brake, for example while the car is standing locked
- 2Check that the brake pedal returns fully when released and that nothing is holding it down
- 3Check that the brake light switch is correctly fitted at the pedal and has not stuck
- 4With a diagnostic tool, look at the brake switch position in live data while the car is standing still with the brake released
- 5If the switch is incorrectly fitted or damaged, have a workshop replace it
- 6The brake lights protect the vehicles behind, so get this fault fixed without delay
Symptoms you may notice4
- The brake lights are lit all the time
- Cruise control will not engage or disengages
