VOLVO
CEM-E00A - Communication with control module. Faulty communication
System
Central Electronic Module (CEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C30 Electric (2011–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The low speed network is blocked when a module registers a serious disturbance, and that module switches itself off. The gauges, instrument lighting and remote control can then stop working. The code can only be read out while the fault is intermittent.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN network wires
- Internal fault in the module
- Internal fault in another module on the same part of the network
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes from all control modules and see which ones show communication faults on the low speed network
- 2Check the connectors on the low speed network for loose connections, corrosion and moisture
- 3Gently flex the cable with the ignition on and see whether the gauges or the remote control change
- 4With a diagnostic tool, clear the fault codes and run a short test to see whether the communication fault returns
- 5Resistance measurements on the network are made with the supply off. Have a workshop do this
- 6A module that communicates faulty sometimes has to be replaced. Let the workshop establish which one it is
Symptoms you may notice3
- No gauges work
- The instrument lighting does not work
- The remote control does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The module switches itself off (bus-off) until its power supply is cut and reconnected
