What does this fault code mean?
The CEM monitors the direct voltage on the level sensor in the fuel pump. If the signal is broken or shorted to battery voltage, a wrong fuel level is shown and the trip computer may show the tank as empty too early. On flexifuel cars the DC/AC converter can also be the cause.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the fuel level sensor on the right-hand side, or a short to battery voltage
- The DC/AC converter is not fitted or is faulty, on flexifuel cars
What you can do
- 1Compare the fuel gauge with the trip computer. Does the tank show empty too early, and does the reading change when you refuel?
- 2Check the fuel pump and level sensor fuses in the engine bay and the CEM. If one has blown, check its circuit for a short to earth
- 3With a diagnostic tool, read the fuel level value in live data. A value that does not change when the tank is filled or emptied points to the sensor
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the fuel level sensor has no break and is not shorted to battery voltage
- 5Check the connectors in the wiring to the fuel pump for corrosion and loose connections, but do not open the fuel system yourself
- 6On flexifuel cars, check that the DC/AC converter is in place and looks undamaged. If it is faulty, have a workshop replace it
Symptoms you may notice2
- The trip computer shows the tank as empty too early
- A wrong fuel level is displayed
What the fault can affect1
- The fuel level is shown as zero
