CEM-P080111 - Reverse Inhibit Control Circuit. General Electrical Failures. Circuit short to ground
System
Central Electronic Module (CEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The CEM monitors the reverse gear inhibit, which stops reverse from being engaged while the car moves forward. The signal cable is shorted to earth, so the voltage is too low and the inhibit may stop working. The fault is most often noticed when the gear lever is stiff or will not go into reverse.
Possible causes
- The signal wire to the reverse inhibit is shorted to earth
What you can do
- 1Check that the reverse inhibit fuses in the engine bay fuse box and in the CEM are intact
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the reverse inhibit is not shorted to earth
- 3Check the connectors on the signal wire for damage, corrosion and loose connections
- 4With a diagnostic tool, clear the fault codes, start a new driving cycle and read the fault code again. If it returns straight away, the fault is active
- 5If no short is found in the wiring, a workshop should check the relay and the CEM output
- 6The reverse inhibit stops reverse being engaged while driving. If it does not work, avoid trying to select reverse while the car moves, and have a workshop fix it
Symptoms you may notice2
- The reverse gear inhibit does not work
- The gear lever is hard or impossible to move into reverse
What the fault can affect2
- The inhibit is switched off during the driving cycle in which the fault is detected
- After 100 driving cycles with the fault present, the inhibit is switched off permanently
