What does this fault code mean?

The CEM sends a frequency-modulated signal to the speed-dependent power steering module (HPAS), and the signal wire is shorted to supply voltage. The voltage then stays constantly high, and the speed-dependent power steering may stop regulating. The fault applies to the V60, S60 and similar models that have this system.

    Possible causes

    • The signal wire to the HPAS module is shorted to supply voltage

    What you can do

    1. 1Start the engine and turn the steering wheel slowly from side to side. If it is stiff when the car is stationary, the fault is active
    2. 2Check the power steering module fuse in the engine bay relay and fuse box. If it has blown, check its circuit for a short to earth before replacing it
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with supply voltage with the ignition on
    4. 4With a diagnostic tool, clear the fault codes and run a short test. If the fault returns straight away, it is active
    5. 5Steering is a safety function. Have a workshop repair the fault promptly rather than putting it off
    6. 6After the work, check that the steering wheel turns easily and that the fault code does not return

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The power steering assistance control does not work

    What the fault can affect2

    • The function switches off during the driving cycle in which the fault is detected
    • After 100 driving cycles with the fault present, the function is switched off permanently

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
